In the digital era, memes have become an omnipresent communication form and a pillar of Internet culture.
(Explanation for baby boomers: memes are vignettes made using images, videos or simple phrases. They are immediately funny and they spread rapidly among online users, generating laughs and a sense of shared belonging).
Who invented the meme?
Memes are rooted in the origins of the World Wide Web. The word ‘meme’ was coined by Richard Dawkins in 1976, in his book ‘The Selfish Gene’, where he described the idea of the ‘cultural unity’ that spreads from person to person, just like in genetics.
The real boom of Internet memes, however, coincides with the dawn of social media in the early 2000s. The advent of platforms such as 4chan, Reddit and the first blogs gave a fertile ground for their creation and spread.
